In Microsoft Exchange Server, a mailbox comprises of two components:
The Active Directory User Account: The attributes of Active Directory contains all the configuration data of the mailbox.
The Exchange User Mailbox: The database of user account in Exchange Server is saved in the mailbox.
When a mailbox of Exchange Server is deleted, it is marked to be disconnected state but retains the database of deleted mailbox. This is the reason why the deleted mailboxes in Exchange Server are known as Disabled mailboxes. The only difference between mailbox and a disconnected mailbox is the Active Directory user account does not have the Exchange attributes. However, the user account is preserved.
What happens when a mailbox is deleted? Simply the Exchange Attributes for Active Directory are removed. Until the disconnected mailbox is under retention period of 30 days, there are chances that it can be activated again. Once, this period by passes, the mailbox is marked as Purged which means now there is no probability to recover deleted mailbox items that store in Exchange 2003, 2007 and another edition version.
